Did you know? Bananas are technically an herb plant. Each Banana plant will grow exactly 1 bunch of bananas typically ranging in weight from 40 - 80 pounds. Each plant will create fruit only once then be exhausted. In a Permaculture Farm the exhausted Banana plants will be chopped down with a machete, split into segments, then laid on the surface of the soil around other flourishing plants. The chopped Banana pieces will break down in the elements and turn into nutrient dense soil! Bananas grow from a Rhizome root system. This means that new Banana plants will be created below the soil and sprout upwards to make new plants! If you bury just one healthy Banana plant you can expect the Rhizome to grow many more plants that you can transplant to new areas for growing even more new Banana plants!
